The worksheet should contain different stories, poems, articles and essays. The complexity of the stories should depend on the grade of the students. The pupils from grade 1 to 5 should be given folklores which depict some history of America as well as some religious myths coined into interesting stories. Such worksheets should test simple understanding of tense and words meaning from context. Story structure questionnaire should also be included in story comprehensions. In addition, it should also have practice questions about the following: Fact and Opinion,Main Idea, and Context Clues.
Read as many English books, magazines and newspapers as you can. Although it is said that reading might not appeared to be an effective grammar-learning activity, the truth is that the more you read, the more you are able to observe sentences that are grammatically correct. When reading books, you should focus on how the passages and sentences are constructed. You should look out for the grammar rules used for that particular sentence that you are not sure. You then need to remember, mark them and think about why it is used the way it is. You may need to refer to a good grammar reference book or dictionary to confirm its grammar usage. This will eventually help your grammar in a long run when you realized the patterns of the sentences encountered as you read.
NEVER use "skill and drill" worksheets. These are the worksheets just made up of columns of problems. There are better materials out there, so do not resort to skill and drill. The very worst problem of skill and drill worksheets is the greatly increased chance of a practiced mistake. The same problem will likely appear several times on the same sheet. A wrong answer once means a wrong answer several times; and a practiced mistake takes hundreds of correct repetitions to fix. This danger alone is important enough to never use any worksheet. I am quite serious about how difficult it is to repair a practiced mistake. Learning is hard enough. Re-learning is much more difficult.
