How can you use your love of hunting to encourage your youngsters to want to read? One way might be to set up a hunting camera in places where deer are likely to travel. As you and your child check your photos, identify the type of deer your images show. Depending on your location, you will see different types. The most common and widespread species in North America is the whitetail. In western United States, northern Mexico and western Canada, you will see mule deer. They are the most common deer in the Western National Parks. Elk or wapiti is the second largest species of deer in the United States, weighing up to about 1300 pounds. Moose are the largest deer in the world and can weigh up to 1800 pounds. Caribou or reindeer are arctic and sub-arctic deer. As kids begin to sort through their photos, they will want to know how many other types there are and may begin to research on the internet-reading for a purpose that meets their needs. When they discover types they are unaccustomed to, and where their habitat lies, they can contact students in another part of the country and, through email, exchange photos and descriptions of the images they have captured. Peers who share their interests provide an outlet for sharing photos, facts and ideas that might even lead to a chosen career field.
Teaching equations to kindergarten children needs to be a hands on activity using tangible resources where children can explore, experiment and self correct. At this age, printed workbooks and worksheets should be avoided and manipulative materials used instead. So bring out all the counters, figurines, shapes and blocks you can find because this is the way in which this age group of children learn best. A simple game with a dice and counters can teach equations. Throw the dice and put out the required number of counters. Throw again and do the same. Then physically put all of the counters together to show one group and count them again (addition).
You can find worksheets for a wide range of courses--almost any course you want to teach your children. These include spelling, writing, English, history, math, music, geography, and others. They are also available for nearly all grade levels. There are printable middle school, high school, elementary school, and even pre-school worksheets. So what kinds of worksheets should you get? Anything where you feel that your child needs further drill. We often have this notion that worksheets are just for math. This, of course, is not true. While they are excellent tools for reviewing math facts such as the multiplication tables and division facts, they are just as useful for reviewing parts of speech or the states in the union.
