There are basic skills every kindergarten needs to know before starting the school year. While the first portion of many school years is used to review basic concepts, teachers quickly move on to new subjects, assuming most children have had plenty of exposure to the basic concepts, including letter and number recognition. The ultimate goal in kindergarten is to get children ready to read, which takes a great deal of time. Teachers typically move on when a majority of the class is ready to learn the basics of reading. If your child is left behind, it could leave him behind for the rest of his school career.
By thinking your handouts through, you will be doing your students a great favor by aiding them through the learning process. Many students do not have enough learning skills. Take them through the process of handling their work. Teach them a system of organization. This can include: How organize a folder of their handouts, What to do with finished worksheets. Perhaps you want to have a showcase of finished student worksheet. Have you considered a portfolio? Model think aloud skills. By using an example to show exactly what you want, you are acting as a facilitator for the students has abilities to process information.
The great books wait for us forever in the back of our memories, ready to give service when needed. If another language is present that means a further enrichment of the reading experience. Literature is a humanizing force that allows us to get in touch not only with our senses and feelings, but also to feel and recognize the thoughts and emotions of other people. We read from serious books of information, but we can read just for fun too. The latter is one of the most enjoyable means to escape from our ordinary lives. I believe teachers should put more emphasis on reading for enjoyment instead of worksheets and homework. The school curriculum should not forget that flexibility also to varying the types of materials students read.
