When your children have their addition facts memorized, they make fewer mistakes. One of the most common comments made by homeschooling mothers is how many math problems their children miss on a daily basis. One way to put a stop to this is by having your children memorize these facts. Having to stop and calculate basic facts on each and every math problem makes for a very long math lesson with many mistakes. This is frustrating to both the parent and the child. Worksheets should not be used as "busy" work. This is a method used by overworked and overwhelmed public school teachers. With many students working in one room at different levels, teachers have no choice but to give "busy" work to maintain a sense of order in the classroom.
Fortunately, with only a little creativity and a home computer, homeschooling educators and parents can individualize many of these materials to reflect the interest of the child(ren) as they teach them to learn to read. Worksheets that cannot be personalized can still provide a wealth of resource ideas for worksheet and practice sheet design and creation. There are so many fresh ideas for worksheets and lesson plans available online and in homeschooling groups that there is no need to shun the use of these viable reading tools. Homemade worksheets used together with new electronic resources, such as computer programs that can individualize the instruction for each student, have been found to result in increased student success. The central idea is to supplement an established program with learning to read resources that mirror the strengths and focus of the child.
Different worksheets are available for different areas of study at home. If you know what your child will be learning for the year, you can already find worksheets for homeschooling on that particular topic. In choosing a worksheet, it is important to review the source and check the material. Ensure that the material and answers are accurate. Evaluate the worksheet by completing it yourself. The worksheet should provide information clearly and accurately. Make sure it is exactly what you need to homeschool your child.
